You've got a website. Congratulations! All the months of planning, designing, and making changes with your web designer have finally paid off. You're ready to debut your prized beauty, but how? You need to market your business. Developing a marketing strategy is key to your success as an internet business. If no one knows about your website, they can't very well go there and procure your products or services, can they? This is where getting your website submitted to Google will help.
Google is the most common search engine used by internet browsers. Millions of people access the site daily, so it's a great place to advertise your business. Getting your website into the search results at Google isn't hard, either. Google is actually an automated search engine that crawls the web every day, searching for new sites to add to its ranks. Once it finds them, they're automatically added to search results. They use a program known as GoogleBot to do this.
If you want to manually submit your URL to the site, you can do that too. By visiting http://www.google.com/addurl/ you can personally type in your website URL and any comments you have. However, they do not guarantee that every URL will end up on their site, and they can't make statements as to if and/or when your site will appear. You'll just have to wait and see. There are some tips to get your site listed, though.
First of all, only submit your main page. The GoogleBot will do the rest, finding all indexes and sub pages of your site after you submit the main URL. Second, only submit once. Wait two weeks, and if you don't see your site listed in the results, try submitting it again. Also, to make it easier to find your site, you should use proper SEO techniques to get better rankings.
Wait - SE what? SEO, also known as Search Engine Optimization, is a tool to help users find your website. You take popular keywords and phrases related to your business or website, and use those in your page title, headlines, and website text to provide relevance when a search is performed. Don't overdo it, though. More than 1-2% (5-10 times in 500 words) will get you kicked right out of the rankings for “keyword stuffing.” Too many people put up sites without legitimate content, stuffed them full of keywords, and submitted them to Google just to get top rankings. Now, there are rules to how SEO should be done, and if you don't follow them, you might not be able to advertise on Google ever again.
Don't worry, though. This rarely happens, as long as you follow the rules. Better yet, hire an SEO specialist to do it for you, you'll get guaranteed results. By using SEO properly, you can get your site listed closer to the top of the search results, which will give you more potential traffic. Most people don't look further than the first page of results, so it's crucial to make it onto that page.
Back to the point, submitting your site to Google is easy. You have two options:
Even for the most basic internet user, this is a fairly simple process. So good luck, and happy Googling!
